"End the occupation !" PAJU Vigil # 869, October 6, 2017: Israeli Culture Minister Attacks Oscar-Nominated Film

Publication date : 2017-10-06

An Israeli film nominated for an Oscar aroused the indignation of Israel’s Minister of Culture, Miri Regev for whom this work amounts to a charge of "ritual murder" against Israeli soldiers. Foxtrot, which won this year's Silver Jubilee Grand Prize at the Venice Film Festival, tells a story of mourning related to two generations of individuals traumatized by military service and deals in particular with the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories .

This film directed by Samuel Maoz won the Israeli Academy of Films Award, which has resulted in it being selected by the Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Film. This choice was denounced by Miri Regev, who has tumultuous relations with the artistic milieu of her country. She was not invited to the award ceremony.

Israeli Culture Minister Attacks Oscar-Nominated Film

Admitting that she had not seen the film, the minister railed against a scene in the film that shows Israeli soldiers killing an innocent Palestinian in a moment of panic. An officer then masks the blunder: "This is a terrible accusation of ritual murder," Miri Regev stated in a video on her Facebook page. Before adding, "As a minister and mother of children who served in the Israeli army, I am ashamed that such a film has won such a prestigious award."

According to her, Foxtrot is "defamatory" and "a lie" to the Israeli army. "The award-winning film represents only those who chose it and not the society or State of Israel . I can only apologize to the Israeli soldiers and their families. They did not deserve that, "the minister added.

Possible modification to the policy of subsidies

She also warned that the policy of public subsidies granted to movies "was going to change", thus suggesting that the films judged "anti-Israel" would no longer receive help. Samuel Maoz had already triumphed in 2009 in Venice with Lebanon, his first autobiographical film "written with his guts", which shows the horrors of war through the sight of a tank during the first Lebanon war in 1982.

Miri Regev created a sensation on the red carpet of the last Cannes Film Festival by climbing the steps in an ivory robe representing a vast panorama of Jerusalem. It was to justify the annexation of East Jerusalem, which has never been recognized by the international community.

See the links to articles/videos which show the execution of unarmed palestinians by Israeli soldiers, thereby proving that the epithets defamatory and lie dare an appropriate description of the Israeli Culture Minister’s comments.
