Boycott products at Adonis

Publication date : 2015-06-29

MARCHÉ ADONIS 2173, rue Ste-Catherine Ouest, Montréal, QC, CA.

Dear Mr. Naaman Aboud,

Le 18 juin 2015

It has come to our attention, as well as to some other members of our organisation who shop at Adonis, that you currently stock Sabra hmmus, a product of the the Israeli company named the Strauss Group which has “adopted” an elite IDF unit. The company’s website has boasted of providing the Golani Brigade “with an ongoing variety of food products for their training or missions, and provide personal care packages for each soldier that completes the path.”

The Strauss Group has also said it gives funds to the IDF unit for “welfare, cultural and educational activities, such as pocket money for underprivileged soldiers, sports and recreational equipment, care packages, and books and games for the soldiers’ club.”

Dear Mr. Naaman Aboud,

The Strauss Group has also said it gives funds to the IDF unit for “welfare, cultural and educational activities, such as pocket money for underprivileged soldiers, sports and recreational equipment, care packages, and books and games for the soldiers’ club.” While that language is no longer found on the Strauss Group website, the company still defends the IDF. In 2011, Ofta Strauss, the company’s chairwoman, told Forbes magazine that “Israeli soldiers are not army; Israeli soldiers are our kids.”

The Golani Brigade played key roles in the Israeli army’s assault on the Gaza Strip in 2008-09 during “Operation Cast Lead.” Widespread human rights abuses and possible war crimes were committed by the Israeli army during the assault...

You may not be aware of the fact that in 2005, a call was made by groups representing Palestinian civil society for a boycott against Israeli products and services, this being the only non-violent way to put an end to Israel’s apartheid regime which enshrines in law a system of segregation and discrimination against the Palestinian people.

‘I have been to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and I have witnessed the racially segregated roads and housing that reminded me so much of the conditions we experienced in South Africa under the racist system of Apartheid.’ Archbishop Desmond Tutu said.

There has been considerable suffering inflicted on Palestinian civilians by Israel over the years and there has been an increase in the construction of illegal Israeli settlements in the Palestinian West Bank and new housing units are being built there on illegally expropriated Palestinian land.

As individuals of conscience, we must not turn our eyes away from the reality of the situation. We have a moral obligation to heed the call by Palestinian civil society to boycott Israeli products, particularly in the case of Israel’s Sabra company which makes no secret of its support for Israel’s military aggression.

We therefore ask you, the management of the Adonis supermarket, to remove Sabra hummus, as well as any other products linked to the Israeli apartheid regime, from your store’s shelves. We will be asking shoppers going into Adonis not to buy Sabra hummus and other Israeli apartheid products. We would appreciate your cooperation in appealing to your sense of solidarity with the Palestinian people and hope that you will comply with our request to remove apartheid products from your shelves.

Respectfully yours,

Bruce Katz, President (514) 582-1642

Chadi Marouf, Vice-President Palestinian and Jewish Unity (PAJU)
